Start of Operation Barkhane

Launched on August 1, 2014 and still underway today, Operation Barkhane is the successor to Operations Serval and Epervier in the Sahel-Saharan band. It is deployed for all the G5 Sahel countries: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad.

Its objective is to combat the spread of terrorism in this affected area, and to train the militaries of these countries to fight it.

The joint theater command post is based in N'Djamena, Chad. The logistical challenge is immense, since the area covered by the operation is equivalent to 5,097,338 km2, which is, by way of comparison, about 10 times the size of metropolitan France (551,695 km2) and comparable to the size of Europe (4,493,712 km2).

The mobility resources deployed are numerous, with 290 heavy armoured vehicles, 380 logistics vehicles and 240 light armoured vehicles. These include TRM10000 trucks, Bastions, VHMs and VBCIs.
