SCORPION PROGRAM KEY FIGURES

From the first analyses in 2005 to the first GRIFFON deliveries in 2019, we look back at the key dates of the SCORPION program.

2005

Since 2005, the Directorate General of Armaments, the Defense Staff and the Army Staff have been preparing the arrival of the SCORPION program. This first phase has led to functional and cost analysis work.

2010, June

Renault Trucks Defense and Nexter have each received a contract from the "Direction des Fabrications d'Armement "(DFA) for upstream studies to develop a demonstrator aimed at validating the solutions that will be chosen for the successor to the VAB.

2010

End of detailed architecture of the SCORPION program. The choice of the industrial partners involved in the project has been established. This is the program development phase.

2014, December

Official launch of the SCORPION program: during his visit to the 27e bataillon de chasseurs alpins (27e BCA) in Varces, the French Minister of Defense, Jean-Yves le Drian, announces the first market for the new French Army program, SCORPION. 

 

2016, June

First presentation of the GRIFFON model at Eurosatory in Paris, the international exhibition for land and air-land defense and security.

2017, April 22nd

The Directorate General of Armaments(DGA) has notified Nexter Systems, Renault Trucks Defense and Thales of its order for the first 319 armored vehicles.

2017, June 22nd

Belgian Defense Minister Steven Vandeput announces in a press release that Belgium has chosen the French SCORPION program to replace the motorized capability of the Land Component.

2018, July 13rd

The Military Programming Law 2019-2025 is promulgated. The texts provide for the delivery of 50% of the SCORPION medium armor before 2025 and an increase in the Defense budget.

2018, October 25th

The Belgian Prime Minister, Charles Michel, officially endorsed the intergovernmental agreement with France on the CAMO program to modernize Belgium's land mobility capacities. Arquus welcomes this agreement, which strengthens the partnership between the French and Belgian armies, as well as between the ministries and defense industries of the two states.

The agreement covers the purchase of 442 SCORPION vehicles, the fruit of the joint expertise of Arquus, Nexter and Thales. This means that 382 VBMR GRIFFON and 60 EBRC JAGUAR, identical to those of the French Army, will replace the Piranha 3C and Dingo II currently in service with the Belgian motorized brigade. The Franco-Belgian intergovernmental agreement also aims to develop cooperation in all areas of land mobility, with in particular a capability development plan linking the two land forces.

2019 , June 24th

The DGA pronounces the qualification of the GRIFFON VTT Félin, which allows the delivery of the first vehicles from July 1, 2019.

2019, July 4th

In the presence of the Minister of the Armed Forces, Florence Parly, the first 6 GRIFFON were delivered to the Army.

Emmanuel Levacher, President of ARQUUS, symbolically handed over the license plate of the first GRIFFON vehicle to the Chief of Staff of the Army [CEMAT], General Jean-Pierre Bosser.

2019, December 30th

The DGA notifies the order 54 GRIFFON MEPAC (Embedded Mortar for Contact Support).

First delivery of GRIFFON MEPAC by 2023.

2020

Several regiments have received GRIFFON armored vehicles since the beginning of the year.

Here is the updated list of the regiments owning GRIFFON :

  • 3rd RIMa Vannes
  • 1st RI Sarrebourg 
  • 13th BCA Barby
  • 21st RIMa Fréjus

2020, September 15th

The Directorate General of Armament orders 271 GRIFFON and 42 JAGUAR. These armored vehicles will join the forces in 2022 and 2023.
