Nationalisation of the Issy les Moulineaux facilities

After the First World War and the success of the FT 17 tank, Renault gradually moved away from the production of armored vehicles to focus on the booming automobile sector.

In 1936, Léon Blum’s government nationalised the engineering department developed by Louis Renault in Issy les Moulineaux and the assembly and test facilities on Quai Stalingrad.

They were combined to form AMLX (Ateliers de Construction d’Issy les Moulineaux) which soon began to produce post-war tanks. In 1949, the prototype of the AMX 13 was developed, the first in a line of armored vehicles all with the same chassis.
